Second Meeting - 27/10/2008

This was another sort of planning meeting, and Sam (our fearless leader whose birthday is Thursday, according to Facebook) told us about his family and interests and growing up/living in Britain.  Since he said he didn't want to write, I'll retell what I can remember.  Since I can remember some odd factoids mostly, I've decided to make this post into a sort of pop quiz.  Decide whether each of the following facts about Mr. Sam Harris is true or false:

1. His parents were both involved in theatre, and his father has a one man show.

2. His mother's parents lived in India, and his mother was born there.

3. His "Gran" was a racy burlesque dancer in India.

4. He grew up in the same location that the Martians landed in H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds.

Picture Round!

5. This is Sam's baby.

6. Sam plays the concertina in a one man polka band, and he is pictured playing at the International Furry Convention.

7. Sam's grandfather was Lord Mayor.

8. Stephen from the International Society was in a band with Sam but he split up the band to tour the world as a Bono impersonator.

9. Sam worked for the BBC where he had to listen to old ladies play the piano and watch videos of the sun.

10. Sam is a great lover of football and his favorite team is AFC Wimbledon.

Well, how did you do?

1. True - Sam's parents were in theatre, and his father is a working actor.

2. True - Sam's grandparents lived in India, and his mum was born there.

3. Sort of true - Sam's Gran had, at the very least, the prettiest legs in an Indian dance troupe, but, since no one really wants to know that kind of thing about their grandmother, Sam doesn't know all the details!

4. True (but fictional) - On the 6th day of Martian invasions in the H.G. Wells novel, the martians landed in Wimbledon.  Oh, and they also play some kind of important tennis match there.

5. False - The baby in said picture is not his (but the eyes make you think so, right?).  Sam grew up with a younger brother, and this is Sam's very adorable nephew, Leo.

6. False - Sam is not cool enough to play in a polka band, so he plays in a regular rock band.  The hat is just because he likes foxes, I think.

7. True - Sam's grandfather was mayor and got to wear a cool, bling-like chain to completely ceremonial, non-political events.

8. True - Sam says that Stephen won't admit to being Yoko Bono, but it's pretty much true.  Luckily, the band is back together and practices in the basement of the International Society.

9. True - While certain Bono impersonators were traveling the world, poor Sam had to work in the call center at the BBC taking calls from people with way too much time on their hands.

10. False - Sam doesn't really like football so much, but I liked the story he told us about Wimbledon AFC.  Apparently, they decided to move the team to another location and the upset fans raised enough money to form their own team.  They even bought some of their own players from before.  I just thought that was pretty cool.  A co-op football team.

We're doing a day long workshop on Saturday with a professional actor, so I'm not sure what's going to happen.  I may blog about it if it's really good or I get some good photos.

First Meeting - 20/10/2008

The International 16 is based at the International Society at the University of Manchester in Manchester, UK.  The 2008/2009 International 16 brings 16 students (and one dog!) from fifteen different countries together for a uniques shared educational and cultural experience.  The group attend regular meetings and workshops together and work towards promoting international friendship and raising cultural awareness.

Every year, the 16 create a performance and workshop which includes songs, stories, dances and games to help introduce children to other cultures.

This year's 16 is:

Alba (and Tori the dog, our official mascot) - Spain
William - France
Annis - Malaysia
Claudia - Portugal/Cape Verde
Achin - India
Dwi - Indonesia
Maksim - Russia
John - Hong Kong
Dragos - Romania
Paul - Germany
Aleksandra - Poland
Maria - Mexico
Wendy - USA
Kirsten - The Netherlands
Artem - Russia
Washington - Zimbabwe

We would never exclude Sam, our British director and fearless leader.  He works for the International Society and came up with the idea of the 16 some years ago.

The idea is to post what goes on at our meetings on this blog, extending our goal of making other people aware of different cultures.  At our meetings each week, one person will be giving a short presentation about their country, and I hope that a condensed version of that will be available here.  As for our initial meeting, we learned everyone's names and where they are from.  It doesn't seem like much, but for me personally, it was tough.  Being in a different country with a lot of strangers means learning new names every day!

Cheers!
Wendy
